Ismail ο·Ί was the baby son of Prophet Ibrahim and his wife Hajar. Ibrahim left them in a dry, empty valley with some dates and a little water. There was nobody else there!
When the water ran out, baby Ismail needed water. Hajar ran back and forth between two hills β Safa and Marwa β seven times, looking for water.
Then a miracle happened! Jibreel struck the ground and water burst from the earth! This is the blessed Zamzam water β still flowing today! π§
Hajar ran and tried her hardest AND she trusted Allah. When we do our best and trust Allah β He opens doors from nowhere! π§
Ismail grew up in Makkah. A tribe called Jurhum settled near the Zamzam water. Ismail grew up with them and learned to speak Arabic.
Ismail grew up and married a woman from the Jurhum tribe. Allah tells us in the Quran that Ismail always kept his promises, prayed his prayers, gave in charity, and was pleasing to Allah!
Keep your promises, pray every day, and be kind β that is what Ismail did, and Allah was pleased with him! π
When Ismail had grown up, his father Ibrahim told him about a dream β Allah was asking Ibrahim to sacrifice Ismail. Ismail said something amazing:
Father β do what Allah has told you. You will find me patient, inshAllah!
Both of them trusted Allah completely. Just as Ibrahim was about to do it, Allah called out: O Ibrahim! You have already passed the test! A ram from Jannah came instead.
This is why we have Eid ul-Adha β to remember this day! π
Ismail was patient and brave even in the hardest test. We remember his bravery every Eid ul-Adha! π
When Ismail was a young man, his father Ibrahim came back to Makkah. Allah told them to build the Ka'bah β Allah's sacred house for everyone to worship in.
Ismail passed stones to his father. As they built, both of them made dua together: Our Lord! Accept this from us β You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing! Our Lord! Make us Muslims, and from our children a Muslim nation!
Every Muslim who prays facing the Ka'bah is the answer to that dua. That means you! π
When you pray facing the Ka'bah, you are answering the dua of Ibrahim and Ismail ο·Ί. How beautiful! π
Ismail was patient, true to his promises, and always pleased Allah. He helped build the Ka'bah and his name is remembered by every Muslim who makes Hajj.
